WHAT IS A LATA?

The federal Communications Commission has divided the United States into many areas which are known as "LATAs"(Local Area Transport Area). North Carolina has seven LATAs.

  704/980 Charlotte exchange and surrounding communities
  910 Wilmington and Fayetteville LATAs
  919 Raleigh LATA and portion of Fayetteville LATA
  336 Greensboro LATA and portion of Charlotte LATA
  252 Rocky Mount LATA and portion of Fayetteville LATA
  828 Asheville LATA and portion of Charlotte LATA


WHAT IS A INTRA-LATA CALL?
A call which originates and terminates within the same LATA is an Intra-LATA Call. These calls appear on your telephone bill under the heading: "Independent Company Calls."


WHAT IS AN INTER-LATA CALL?
A call which originates in one LATA and terminates in another LATA within the state is an INTRASTATE Inter-LATA call. A call which originates in one LATA and terminates in another LATA in ANOTHER STATE is an INTERSTATE Inter-LATA call. These calls appear on your phone bill under the heading: "AT&T Communications Calls," or Alternate Carrier Calls."
